It’s impossible to be bored in a town like Tambun with its parks, highlands, caves, temples, museum - not to mention the endless array of the most delicious food!
Gua Tempurung is one of the largest natural limestone caves in Peninsular Malaysia. 1.5km in length, the cave contains five huge caverns that are filled with elegant formations of stalagmites and overhanging stalactites.
Geological Museum in Ipoh has an impressive collection of minerals, fossils, precious stones and rock specimens. It is also noted for its exhibition of tin ore, including the best specimen of casseterite in the world.
Handicraft Development Centre is located at the 40th kilometre, Ipoh (10 kilometres from Kuala Kangsar) - Enggor road and has taken on the responsibility of speeding up the growth and development of the handicraft industry, especially in Perak.
Ipoh Railway Station is a stately building of Moorish architecture and closely resembles its Kuala Lumpur counterpart. It is an impressive landmark fronted by a flower garden.
Istana Iskandariah A leisure walk will bring you close to the Royal Palace in Jalan Istana. Here is the official residence of the Sultan of Perak. Prior to the construction of Iskandariah Palace in 1926, the Sultan resided at Istana Kenangan which is now the Perak Museum.
Kellie’s Castle is located within a fifteen minute drive of the farm stays and is recognized by international guide books as a key attraction in the State of Perak. These ruins were built by an English rubber tycoon, William Kellie Smith, during the late 19th century. The structure was never completed as he left for England where he died in 1926. It is believed that it has hidden rooms and secret tunnels.
Kek Lok Tong Temple is one of the more recent cave temples to be opened in Ipoh. What sets this cave temple apart from the rest are its collection of bronze statues and well-manicured garden.
Kota Tampan is an archaeological site. It is believed that the earliest civilisation in the region had its roots here. Excavation works have revealed tools dating back to the Bronze Age.
Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut) This beautifully breathtaking hill resort was formerly known as Maxwell Hill. An array of bungalows aptly facilitated, suffices for groups, family or single outing. Mekprasit Temple is a Thai Buddhist temple located about 3km north of Ipoh, the main trunk road to Taiping. The key attraction in the temple is a 24-metre long reclining Buddha, which is one of the largest in Malaysia.
Orang Asli Village The Batang Padang district encompasses several areas inhabited by the ‘Orang Asli’ community. Literally translated, the terms means "original people", attesting to a long-standing history in this area. Visitors will find some of these villages in the vicinity of Iskandar waterfall and Kuala Woh. The main source of income of Orang Asli is from the sale of traditional handicraft, as well as fruits such as durian and other forest produce including petai.
Pasar Malam or Night Market comprise makeshift stalls, which stock anything from folk medicine and fresh fruits to household utensils and fashion wear. These popular night bazaars are a treat for the senses and a paradise for bargain hunters.
Perak Tong , a limestone cave temple, is located at Jalan Kuala Kangsar, 6km to the north of Ipoh. This temple houses over 40 Buddha statues, the centre piece being a 12.8m high sitting Buddha. Beyond the main altar, there is a passage which leads into the interior of the cave. After a steep climb of 385 steps, the cave opens again to reveal a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. On the walls of the cave, a visitor will find himself fascinated by mystical mural paintings.
Pulau Tiga Handicraft Centre Among the handicraft that may be seen at the centre are porcelain and clay ware, gold thread embroidery, intricate weaveworks as well as the local version of the labu sayong, a range of semi-porous blackened burnt clay craft, of which the most popular are the famed water pitchers. The embossed designs produced at Pulau Tiga are particularly attractive.
Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan Standing at 25.5 metres tall, its construction detail gives it an appearance comprising of 8 different levels. Once inside, however, one will be surprised to discover that the building is actually divided only into 3 storeys.
Lost World of Tambun is an exciting water theme park in Tambun featuring a wave pool, natural hot spring, children’s area as well as tube slide and speed coasters. Visitors can also take the opportunity to see the theme park’s tiger.
Royal Museum-Istana Kenangan Previously known as Istana Kenangan, Istana Tepas Lembah, the Perak Royal Museum is an amazing achievement in architectural designs. It was built in the traditional way without using a single nail. Situated near the Istana Iskandariah, the Sultan of Perak’s official palace at Kuala Kangsar, the museum houses the Royal Regalia, photographs of the Royal Family, illustrations and artifacts of the past and present monarchy in Perak.
Tambun Caves Neolithic rock painting are a definite attraction in the Tambun Caves situated at Tambun which is just outside Ipoh. The 2,000-year old paintings which were first discovered by more recent rock artists, speak of early dwellers of the Malay Peninsula. (This Cave is closed to the public but the Museum will allow interested party to study the caves.)
The Birch Memorial Tower Along Jalan Raja Musa Aziz stands a clock tower in memory of the British Resident, J.W.W. Birch, who was killed at Pasir Salak on November 2, 1875. There is also a children’s playground and out-door eateries serving some of Ipoh’s better known hawker fares.

Culinary Delights: Tambun is noted for good, reasonably priced Chinese fare, particularly sar hor fun (noodles), dim sum, char kuey teow (fried flat rice noodles) and chicken rice with bean sprouts. A popular Malay dish here is rending tok, a richly flavoured dried beef cooked with coconut milk and chili paste. Favourite snacks here include Menglembu groundnuts, Kampar Chicken Biscuits, bean curd sticks (char tai), Chinese steamed buns (pau) Tambun Biscuits, Tambun pomelos and of course, freshly brewed Ipoh White Coffee.
